I will never, ever, forget Chris Bird. He was well known as the author of 'Secret Life of Plants' and 'Secrets of the Soil', as well as 'The Trial and Persecution of Gaston Naessens'. Chris passed away on May 2nd, 1992, but was a popular speaker at a HANS meeting prior to that. He also stayed at my house during his visit.

He had the longest eyebrows that I had ever seen in my life. Some of them were well over an inch. I remember saying 'Chris. I am going to take this picture of you, and you have a few VERY long eyebrows. Shall I cut them for you?'

Chris said 'My eyebrows are my identity, and I like them exactly the way they are'.

True enough. He was certainly right on about that. He had a profoundly entertaining point of view, with a deep & gravelly voice, and when he spoke you knew you were in the presence of amazing character & insight. One of the meetings he was at was the same meeting as Dr Donald Branigan, who has also passed away. A medical doctor, and former Mayor of Whitehorse, YT. The two of them together were fascinating to watch - sharing ideas, discoveries, excitement. They were instant friends, and I was pleased to be able to share this time with them.
